THIS WEEKEND
- Start to look for your own song that connects to one of the beliefs of Transcendentalism -- these songs are everywhere and in every genre. To get started you could look at the following list of songs or do a google search, but I really encourage you to find a song on your own playlist, a song that is on your regular rotation. Doing the work for this project will be much more meaningful if the song already means something to you. Look through your titles and lyrics looking for songs that talk about any of the following:
- be your own person
- ignore the haters
- pay attention to what is really important
- follow your own heart
- follow your own path
- work to make a better world
- make a connection with nature
- find the sublime
- experience every moment, be in the present
WEEK AT A GLANCE:
Tuesday 1/20:
- Continue Reader's Theater of Act I
- Discuss Thoreau's "experiment" and whether it is possible to devise different ways of living in our society today. Is it possible to get off the hamster wheel? Can one find a way to live more fully before retirement (according to Henry's point)?
- Watch NYTimes' video "Living (mostly) off the grid" -- what would be the advantages and disadvantages of living this kind of life?
- Homework: Finish reading Act I; check for understanding using plot questions on page 2 of packet and page numbers of major incidents on page 3. Work on characterization chart -- due on Thursday
Wednesday 1/21
- Act I Quiz
- Work on vocab exercises for unit 4
- Work on characterization chart
- Homework: read first two scenes of Act II, through the exit of Henry Williams -- pages 71-84 in the big book, pages 77-91 in the little book. Finish characterization chart
Thursday 1/22
- Read Act II to track the conflict between Henry and Waldo -- what does this conflict say about each man and about the best way to make change in society? With which man do you agree more?
- Homework: finish reading the play and study for vocab quiz
Friday 1/23
- Vocab quiz 4
- Discuss the message of the play and whether you think Henry or Waldo makes the "better man"
