TUESDAY JANUARY 21
- Begin to examine the rift between Waldo Emerson and Henry Thoreau and start to reflect on the big question -- Who is the better man? There is not a clear-cut answer to this question; it is much more complicated. Which man makes a deeper impact, which man stands up for his beliefs more?
- Work on character and conflict chart
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 22
- Emerson in his own words: "Self Reliance"
- Connect the ideas from Emerson's essay to the actions we see in the play. Why would this essay have so inspired Henry? How do you see the ideas in the essay reflected in Henry's actions?
THURSDAY JANUARY 23
- Thoreau in his own words: Walden
- Connect the ideas from Thoreau's essay to the actions we see in the play. How does the essay connect with the man we see in the play? Do you better understand his reasons for moving to the woods? Why does he decide to leave the woods and how does that decision connect with Henry's feelings about society and the actions that a man should take to improve his society?
FRIDAY JANUARY 24
- Be finished reading Act II prior to class, and be finished with the Thoreau packet except the last page (the one with the circles) prior to class
- Better Man Debate preparation -- you will choose either Henry or Waldo to defend as the better man. Again, this is not a black and white issue. You will have to think very carefully about each man's character strengths and character weaknesses, and to come to terms with which man you think can best effect change in the world
