- Quick Write: What does it mean to be on the verge of a new frontier? Are we headed for a brighter future or utter collapse?
- Read "Millenials: The New Greatest Generation" by Joel Stein
TUESDAY 8/5
- Finish reading Stein's "Millennials"
- Discuss Stein's main claim and evidence, noting his structure
- Complete discussion notes and response paragraphs in groups/partners
- Homework: finish response paragraph
WEDNESDAY 8/6
- View “The Power of Belief - Mindset and Success: Eduardo Briceno at TEDxManhattanBeach.”
- Take notes on the difference between the fixed mindset and growth mindset. What do you see in yourself?
- Small group discussion: how does our society today encourage one mindset or the other? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each mindset? Which mindset would serve you better? If schools wanted to encourage growth mindsets, what would need to change?
- Homework: Take the "quiz" to test your mindset. Take some notes about what the quiz tells you about your mindset or print your results
THURSDAY 8/7
- Choose one of the mindset articles to read and complete reader's notebook entry:
- “The Power--and Peril--of Praising Your Kids” by Po Bronson (page 13, you only have to read the first four pages; about parenting and elementary school kids)
- “Mindsets: Developing Talent through Growth Mindset” by Carol Dweck (page 18, about coaches and athletes
- “If You’re Open to Growth, You Tend to Grow” by Janet Rae-Dupree (page 24, about careers and the workplace, particularly tech workers
- Reader's notebook entry -- if you choose the discussion question option, you may choose several of the following questions as a spring board for your thinking. Feel free to diverge
- How does the article define a fixed mindset and growth mindset?
- How does it relate to the group discussed in the article (young children, athletes or workers)?
- Which mindset would lead to healthier life? A more productive life? A more rewarding life? Why?
- How does the article make you think about your own experiences of school and learning?
- Do you agree with Dweck’s theory of fixed and growth mindset?
- Do you think there are any disadvantages or limitations to Dweck’s theory?
FRIDAY 8/8
- Discuss thoughts about mindsets and how schools could better encourage a growth mindset.
- Develop goals that shift from a fixed to a growth mindset
- Here is the summer reading review guide if you would like to prepare over the weekend -- you will have the opportunity to work in groups on Monday to prepare. You may use handwritten notes for the constructed response (not for the multiple choice). You may bring notes or an outline but not anything printed or a completed essay
