RECENT HANDOUTS AND PRESENTATIONS

Model essays to review for writing technique -- notice how the writer shifts from narrative to expository to commentary.  Read my drafting tips for each writing technique and then look at these model essays to find more examples that might inspire you to be more descriptive, expdressive, specific and thoughtful.  You can do it!
Revision and proofreading -- remember that re-vision is about seeing your work anew, so you need to take a break from your paper so that you bring fresh eyes to it so that you can recognize the areas where you need to add more detail, elaboration, thought, and commentary.  Also, you might recognize areas that now seem out of place or unrelated.  I will go to my grave saying that good writing happens on revision.  So be sure to give yourself time to write and rewrite.  Use the following revision steps to start with big picture concerns like depth of thought and development; then you can work on style and mechanics.
  1. Basic Paper Requirements Checklist
  2. Peer Revision Checklist -- Big Ideas, Cohesion and Development
  3. Self Revision Checklist -- Lead-Ins, Citations, Word Choice
  4. Quote Blending and Lead Ins
  5. Revising wordiness into conciseness
  6. Paragraph Logic and Transitions
  7. Strong Verbs
  8. MLA Formatting and Works Cited page

Monday through Wednesday

Finish your rough draft and work through the revision and proofreading activities listed above.

Thursday 4/4

Bring all of your support materials and the word document/digital file of your paper so that we can upload it to turnitin.com.  I will not accept papers without a plagiarism check.

Here are the materials that you need to bring --
  • Transcript
  • Research articles with paragraph of summary for each article
  • Outline
  • Rough Draft with evidence that you have read and revised your paper -- mark it up and make the changes.  It is crucial that your print your article and read it on paper; you will catch so much more when you read it that way than on the computer screen.  PLEASE do not turn in a paper that you have not even read; have some mercy on me! :)

Please email me freely with your comments and questions at krista.bowen@cobbk12.org. Although the school does provide me with voicemail, I have access to email much more readily. Please extend me the courtesy of one or two days’ time to respond. I also encourage students to speak with me directly as I will typically coordinate with students to handle resolutions.
