- Quote Journal -- choose one of the quotations that connects to you and inspires you; write a half-page journal reflecting on your life and thinking about how the quotation makes you think about where you want to go with your life
- Read and annotate song lyrics to look at how pop culture continues to explore the ideas and beliefs important to the Transcendentalists
- Start to look for your own song that connects to one of the beliefs of Transcendentalism -- these songs are everywhere and in every genre. To get started you could look at the following list of songs or do a google search, but I really encourage you to find a song on your own playlist, a song that is on your regular rotation. Doing the work for this project will be much more meaningful if the song already means something to you. Look through your titles and lyrics looking for songs that talk about any of the following:
- be your own person
- ignore the haters
- pay attention to what is really important
- follow your own heart
- follow your own path
- work to make a better world
- make a connection with nature
- find the sublime
- experience every moment, be in the present
Friday 1/9:
- Turn in quote journals and transcendentalism puzzles
- Background on the Mexican war through "The Now Thoreau," the preface to The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail -- can a person be a paradox? do our contradictions reveal something true about us? Fill out first page of the The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail packet
- Letter to self -- due in a sealed envelope at the end of class
